Todd V. Wolfson, award-winning Austin photographer noted for his insightful portraits of Austin’s musicians and lifestyle, is on a forced hiatus due to a career-threatening bicycle wreck. On July 11th, leisurely cruising neighborhood streets on a pre-dawn ride, Todd hit a patch of defective pavement and was thrown over the bike’s handlebars into the street — landing squarely on his right elbow and head. His elbow joint was split in half and he sustained two additional compound fractures in that arm. His head injury required 11 stitches, and he suffered numerous internal injuries.

A highly skilled orthopedic surgeon repaired Todd’s arm with 16 pins and two metal plates. After several months of healing and physical therapy Todd will be able to use his right arm again to create the artistic portraits that have won him so many fans. But until that time comes, Todd is out of work — facing staggering medical bills and a long road of painful rehabilitation.

Todd has lived as part of Austin’s artistic community for 30 years, generously giving his time and skills to fellow musicians and artists. He has devoted many, many hours to creating posters, promotional pictures, and album covers for numerous charitable causes. He also grants nearly unrestricted access to his copyrighted images at no charge to his artist subjects. Because of his generous spirit, Todd is blessed with the friendship of some of the most talented people in the world. A benefit concert is planned for September 9, 2009 at Antone’s nightclub in Austin. Further information will be provided as soon as the details are final.

The Mexico City-based Mexican Institute of Sound consists not of an “institute,” or even a band. It’s just one man, Camilo Lara. Lara amuses himself by using the name “Mexican Institute of Sound.” In Spanish, the initials are almost the same as the Mexican Institute of Health — the most bureaucratic institution he could think of.

Lara’s new album, Soy Sauce, is the talk of the alternative music scene in Mexico City. It pushes eclecticism to a new level by mixing mariachi with hip-hop, rock and electronica, while some songs feel reminiscent of ’80s British New Wave. There’s a love song, “Te Quiero Mucho,” which disintegrates into the braying of barnyard animals. He has a Mexican pop star, Paty Cantu, who usually sings soulful love songs in Spanish, appearing in a hip-hop tune in English.

ambigrams, like the one to the left, are words drawn in such a way that they can be rotated around, commonly by 180 degrees, and still be read (they usually say the same thing both ways but that doesnt always have to be the case). pretty amazing stuff let me tell you. the showcased ambigram here was done by famous artist and philosopher john langdon. he is a genius at ambigrams, as is obviously depicted. the close relative of the ambigram, albeit much less visually appealing, is known as the palindrome. these are sentences or words whose comprised letters can be read forward or backward and still spell the same thing. examples of this would be "star rats" or "radar." usually, the longer the sentence the more impressive the palindrome, but theres some short ones that are brilliant. another: "poor dan is in a droop." note that the seperation of letters into words usually doesnt break up the same way when read backwards. both of these unusual ways of viewing letters, language, syntax, and symmetry intrique me deeply; they let you view things from a different and new perspective. not only that, but from a viewpoint of balance and harmony in such a unexpected area: letters and words. they are stronger than most people think or are lead to believe! some other smart palindromes are:

a man, a plan, a canal, panama!

god lived as a devil dog

but the top palindrome, at least in my book, is in spanish. it goes:

’se verlas al reves’

and that translates to: ‘ i know how to see them backwards ‘
i mean, it doesnt get much better than that!

i really want to get back into this. i used to just sit down and write whatever came to mind. trying to turn it into a poem was always a delightful challenge, and it is a very good way to get things off your chest; or to have a introspective experience.

anyways, thought i’d share some of them, hope you enjoy!

back track -

space exploration in this chaotic nation
will never last its expected duration-
unless we acknowledge the unknown.
we cannot pursue into further depths
until we finish cleaning all of our mess

we speak of advancement, we speak of evolution.
but we never speak of the evil dissolution.
it abounds the earth in many shapes and forms,
and stirs the seas with un-noticed storms.

set sail with me into the abyss of humanity
as we try to explain the world’s mindless vanity.
sinful indulgence or unknown origins,
we search for the time where it all begins.

four corners pointing to the ends of the universe
i speak to thee when you hear my verse.
